October 26th, 2008. My daughter’s purse was taken from the car last night. The young man got her bank card and charged $115 at the Rite Aid on 38th in Bellevue. He tried to use it at the McDonalds, but was denied. We called the police and they are following up on the crime.

An update on the purse theft… The person who used the stolen bank card was described by the Rite Aid store as a young, white male, very skinny, between the ages of 18-22, wearing baggy pants, worn low, and a hooded sweatshirt. He purchased a birthday card and then was able to buy a $115 prepaid Visa. (Hard to believe with my daughter’s picture on the card.) He can be identified because of video surveillance at the McDonalds in Eastgate where the card was denied. The police have requested that footage.

Heard that a neighbor of ours (up a few houses on 14th) had his car stolen right out of his garage sometime within the last couple of weeks! Yikes!!!

Thursday, Oct 30th around 7 pm I saw a doe walking across 121st between SE 20th and SE 21st. I didn’t know we still had deer around here, have seen coyotes and raccoons.

We used to have a regular visitor. Haven’t seen the deer for a long time. We used to be able to tell because our rose buds would all be nipped off. The deer was seen walking near my yard, but glad to say the roses are still in tact!

I think it’s so important that as neighbors, we seek to walk that fine line between being aware and being nosy. Looking out for one another is the best way to help prevent crime. Of course in the middle of the night most of us are sleeping, but things like dogs barking can alert us to take a peek to see what’s going on.
Just my thoughts.
Woodridge is still one of the best places to live (even after 40 years!).

Please don’t feed the raccoons! They are pests. They dig up our sod, poo on our shed and can easily hurt/kill your pet.

We are missing one of our cats. Given the time of year, the weather and all the recent coyote sightings, I fear the worst. He’s a juvenile male, long and lanky. He has long hair with black and white markings like Sylvester and a little black mustache. Anyone who has seen him or knows of any recent disturbance around lower 121st and 14th please let me know. Meantime, I’ll have to figure out what to tell the boys. -Rebecca Thornton

Many of you may have heard already that two homes on the hill have been broken into during the day within the last week. Please remember to lock your doors and windows and keep an eye out for any suspious going ons within your neighborhood. Let’s continue to keep Woodridge a safe and peaceful place to live.

Our home was broken into about a year ago, middle of the day. Bellevue police said that if you ever think something doesn’t seem right, i.e. a van in your neighbors driveway, etc. it NEVER hurts to call, even if you’re wrong. They would love to catch these guys! Our neighbor had seen a young man in our empty carport that morning thought it was odd, but didn’t call. We lost two laptops, and had our bedroom ransacked for jewelry that day. We were the only house on the block that it was visible nobody was home (empty carport).

My cat Onyx has been missing since 5/16….he is 5 yrs old, black with white on chest and tummy, very friendly, has a red heart shape id tag and is microchipped. If anyone may have seen him since 5/16, please contact me. I live at 1703 123rd….phone is 425-533-8738. Please check your garages and sheds if you’ve locked them up since then and haven’t been back in! Also, on 5/17, while out looking for him spotted a coyote run down 123rd and ditch into the overgrown bushes of a house across from 17th. He may be responsible for my cat disappearance but still want to try and find him.
Thanks

Our neighbors front door was kicked in several weeks ago, during the day. We happened to be out looking at a new security door at the time and needless to say, we went back to purchase; also upgraded our alarm. If this happens to you, don’t walk in – go somewhere safe and call the police

I’ve recently heard that there was a break-in in the area in the middle of the day. Can anyone confirm this piece of information? And if so, does anyone have any information on it?

To All Norwood Village Owners and Residents For Whom We Have Email Addresses:
A Norwood Village resident living in the 127th Ave SE area reported that someone tried to break into the resident’s home earlier this afternoon (Friday).
The intruder loudly knocked on the door several times with an interval between knocks. When no one answered, the intruder attempted to kick in the door. It turned out that the resident was home, but had not answered the door. When that became evident, the intruder left immediately. It appears that the intruder is not interested in entering an occupied home.
There were two intruders, one at the door and one in the getaway car. The intruder at the door was described as large and bulky and black. The iresident was unable to see the intruder in the car. The car was described as a black or dark gray Honda. The intruders backed the car into the resident’s driveway for an easy getaway.
The police were called and did an investigation at the scene. The resident got the license number of the car and gave it to the police.
The actions described are commonly used by individuals looking for vacant homes to burgle. Typically if someone answers the door, the individual will ask for directions or present themselves as some kind of sales person or give another plausible reason for being there.
Please be sure to secure your home–this is particularly important during hot weather as it is usual to leave doors and windows open for ventilation.
If someone comes to your door who meets the description above, please call the police and tell them what happened after they leave. Do NOT make any attempt to apprehend a suspect.

There has been a red Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a white male seen parked up and down 121st Ave SE. The driver has been noticed taking pictures of homes and takes off when approached. I plan to call the police if I see the truck again.

A man came to our house today and said he was doing charity work for two houses at Green Lake and wanted a contribution. They were for homeless and alcohohic people. He had a list of all of the houses in this area, by address. He would cross off any house where there were people home. The houses that were unoccupied were not crossed off. My wife felt this information could be present problem by knowing who was not home. She is very concerned over this.

I would call the police re: the guy with the list of addresses. If he has a permit, they should know about it and if he doesn’t, he shouldn’t be here.

It was wonderful to see this web address posted in the recent addition of the community newsletter. In addition, the article titled “Crime on the Hill” underscores the importance of building community. There have been 28 thefts reported this year on Woodridge Hill. Detective Chinn of the Bellevue Police Department is available to hear neighbors’ concerns. His number is (425)452-6915 and his specialty is in prevention, such as in helping neighbors organize block watches.

Greetings Woodridge Community Crime fighters,
I would like to say that communication among neighbors is one of the most important factors in keeping your neighborhood safe. Without your communicating suspicious activity, how does your neighbor know what to look for?
Keep communicating and do not hesitate to call 9-1-1 when in doubt.

My family has lived in Woodridge for almost 7 years and love the neighborhood.
I’m curious to know if any of the break-ins that have occurred have happened to homes with alarms and/or dogs? Do these seem to be effective deterrents?
Besides being vacant, are there any conditions that the break-ins have in common that one can safeguard against?

Matt,
Alarms are effective deterrents. the signage is the most important part of the deterrent. if you have an alarm make sure you have the post sign in front and in back. Dogs are I think are a hit or miss( ie pit bull vs poodle).
Vacant houses ususally are not targeted for burglaries because there is nothing to take. I take the meaning of vacant to be empty of people and stuff.
Things you can do: lock your doors and windows would be a great start and call 9-1-1 quickly when you see something suspicous

New Credit Card Scam
Snopes.Com says this is true. To verify see this site: http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/creditcard.asp
This one is pretty slick since they provide YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want.
Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it… This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA & Master Card Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you’ll be better prepared to protect yourself.
One of our employees was called on Wednesday from ‘VISA’, and I was called on Thursday from ‘Master Card’.. The scam works like this: Caller: ‘This is (name), and I’m calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I’m calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a Marketing company based in ?’
When you say ‘No’, the caller continues with, ‘Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?’
You say ‘yes’. The caller continues – ‘I will be starting a Fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1- 800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800 -VISA) and ask for Security.’
You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. ‘Do you need me to read it again?’
Here’s the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works. The caller then says, ‘I need to verify you are in possession of your card’. He’ll ask you to ‘turn your card over and look for some numbers’. There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security Numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he’ll say, ‘That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?’ After you say No, the caller then thanks you and states, ‘Don’t hesitate to call back if you do, and hangs up.
You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number.. But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question.. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of $497.99 was charged to our card.
Long story – short – we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is reissuing us a new number. What the scammers want is the 3 -digit PIN number on the back of the card Don’t give it to them. Instead, tell them you’ll call VISA or Master card directly for verification of their conversation. The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you’re receiving a credit. However, by the time you get your statement you’ll see charges for purchases you didn’t make, and by then it’s almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.
What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a ‘Jason Richardson of Master Card’ with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA scam. This time I didn’t let him finish. I hung up! We filed a police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking several of these reports daily! They also urged us to tell everybody we know that this scam is happening.
Please pass this on to all your family, friends and neighbors. By informing each other, we protect each other.
