With summer break coming, here are some tips for a child that maybe home alone.
· If your child comes home to an empty house- if you have an alarm make sure you set it and they know the arm/disarm code. Make sure they know the warning tones when the home alarm has been breached. Make sure they understand that if they see an open door/window, hear someone inside or see that items in the home have been moved or missing, that they should back out and go to a neighbor’s home and call 9-1-1
· Consider a sitter
· Have the child contact you when they get home. Then try to keep off your cellular phone
· Home Alarm- make sure the child knows how to arm, disarm, and how to set off the “panic” mode
· Answering the phone- you make the decision of should they answer or not. If they do then never have child tell the caller that he/she is home alone.
Caller: may I speak to your mother?
Child: yell “ mom/dad someone is on the phone”
Child: wait 5-10 seconds
Child: can I take a message
NOTE: if the caller is persistent, have the child take the message and call you ASAP
· Have emergency phone numbers available – trusted neighbors/ relatives/ your work/ 9-1-1
· Have them remember your cellular numbers
· Have a trusted neighbors home available to your child if they need to go somewhere
· If you have a car, park it in the driveway. Without the garage door opener in it. You are trying to show that someone is home
· Exiting is an option if someone is breaking in. But if possible they should try to check the area they will be running into. The burglar might have a lookout/ partner. When they get out: run to a neighbors home and call 9-1-1
· Make sure that they do not have the volume up to loud where they cannot hear the doorbell or someone knocking
· Never open the door to strangers/ talk thru the door. Being quiet is not a good idea, a burglar is looking for an empty home and if the child does not answer then the burglar will believe the home is empty
SUSPECT: KNOCK, KNOCK
CHILD: “WHO IS IT?”
SUSPECT: I AM SELLING WINDOWS
CHILD:” MOM / DAD SOMEONE IS AT THE DOOR”( LOUD and then wait 5-10 seconds)
CHILD: “NO, THANK YOU” (child- pick up a hand held phone and watch suspect walk away or if the suspect walks behind the home then call 9-1-1 or if the suspect does not leave call 9-1-1 )
· If you do not want your child to carry a key, consider a key safe. The combination can be set by you (http://www.bing.com/shopping/keysafe-slimline/p/4564D1FEB68CD36F5011?q=keysafe&lpq=keysafe&FORM=HURE )
· Call and check on status of child
· Make sure that the child understands that if someone is breaking in their home, they should call 9-1-1 first.
· VOIP- check with your VOIP provider to make sure that you have 9-1-1 service and the correct information ( http://www.fcc.gov/guides/voip-and-911-service )
· Practice, practice
· If your child is in doubt call 9-1-1. Your safety and especially your child’s safety is important to us

Summer parties!!! Get to know your neighbors and fight crime
If you want a fire truck or police car to show up at your event, give me a call. REMEMBER!!! National Night Out is August 7 (Tuesday)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, May 24, 2012

City promotes block parties, neighborhood bonds
BELLEVUE – Recognizing that block parties are one of the best ways neighbors get to know each other, the city is offering assistance with organization and resources this summer.
In a separate promotion, some neighborhood groups will be given guided tours of the city’s sculpture exhibition opening in July.
Bellevue’s Neighborhood Outreach team helps organize block parties and offers the guided tours as part of its Neighbor Link program, intended to bring neighbors and families together in a spirit of community service and celebration.
Help with block parties
There are many creative ways to plan a block party or – even better – combine it with a service project, and Neighborhood Outreach is happy to help. Staff can design and print flyers and an outdoor party banner.
Residents who combine a food drive or other community service project with their block party will also receive four Seattle Mariners tickets to give away at their event. Block parties must take place between June 1 and Sept. 15 to qualify.
Guided Sculpture Exhibition tours
Bellevue’s popular biennial sculpture exhibition, featuring sculptures and installations at City Hall and Downtown Park and points in between, will open on July 13. The exhibition, “Bellwether 2012: reGeneration,” will feature works that reflect Bellevue’s emergence as a multicultural community with a dynamic, high-rise downtown.
Tours led by city arts specialist Mary Pat Byrne are being offered to a limited number of neighborhood groups. The 90-minute tours, on weekdays between July 15 and Oct. 1, are available morning, mid-day or at 5 p.m. for groups of six to 12 neighbors. Prior to each tour, the neighborhood group will be invited to a complimentary coffee at Vovito Caffé and Gelato.
Advance reservations are required, and tours will fill quickly. For more information or to make your reservation for a Neighbor Link block party or art tour, contact Julie Ellenhorn in Neighborhood Outreach,

I am posting for myself and a neighbor, we both have a missing cat.
The local shelters and animal control said that neighbors might want to check under their porches, in their tool sheds etc. Not just to help your neighbor find their cat, but you also do not want an injured and dying animal left there.
*One cat is a black male domestic short-hair, skittish in nature between 16-18 years old, slim, acts like he is about 10 years old. last seen on Friday 05/11/12 on 23rd St near 123rd. He has no collar, won’t keep it on. His name is Mouse.
*The other is a male white bellied with black and grey striped legs, and his back and head are kind of calico colored. he is about 3 years old, very friendly, he is chipped but has no collar. He was last seen Saturday 05/12/12 on 127th ave near 20th pl. His name is Buddy.

The coyote has been in our front yard (20th St) lately and our cat was so spooked she was missing for two days. It was broad daylight. Keep a close watch for them if you let your cat out.

The Woodridge Community Association meeting May 17th actually begins at 6:30 PM with the City giving an overview of proposed sign options. The event happens at Woodridge Elementary School’s Auditorium, as it has for years. Please plan to attend!
A newsletter should be forthcoming soon with details of this event, as well as other news that pertains to all Woodridge residents. Thanks to our Scout troop for delivering the newsletter to our homes, and to Vicki for editing!

If you are thinking of buying a home on Woodridge – Insist that the property be surveyed. We learned the very hard way that fences are NOT placed on property lines which made the tree height limit a major issue. Learn the covenants and accept that these covenants are legally bound to your property, even if the previous owner refused to comply. And for those of us already settled in here, share what you know with those looking. Help them out. Realtors care about the sale. Just last week, a realtor told a prospective buyer that the pool is “solar heated”. (Translation = not heated.)

Bellevue Police Bust ID Theft Ring
Bellevue, WA – The head of an organized Eastside ID Theft Ring is arrested including several of her associates. Stopping this prolific ring would not have been possible without the assistance of Kirkland Police and the King County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation stemmed from an auto theft and drug investigation in the fall of 2011; that investigation uncovered evidence of the Bellevue-based, organized identity theft ring. The female ringleader received mail and personal financial documents obtained by her crew that was actively engaged in car prowls, mail thefts, and residential burglaries in Bellevue and the greater Eastside.
The ringleader used computers, digital cameras and imaging software, air brushes and laminating supplies to produce legitimate looking Washington Driver’s Licenses. The suspects would then use the forged IDs and the victims’ real credit cards and washed checks to make expensive purchases at stores and to cash large checks at area banks. The proceeds would then be split with the ring leader and her associates; the associates would also receive meth from the ringleader.
On March 30th, the ringleader and one of her associates were involved in an ID theft and assault at an AT&T store in Kirkland but fled the scene before law enforcement could arrest them. The King County Prosecutor’s Office assigned two deputy prosecutors to the case and on April 25th the ringleader and three of her cohorts were arrested by the Bellevue Police Special Enforcement Team (SET) following a traffic stop in Lake Forest Park. She was subsequently charged with 16 felony counts including ID Theft, Assault, Forgery, Financial Fraud, and Possession of Methamphetamine.
Armed with additional search warrants, SET searched two Bellevue residences and a Renton hotel where they discovered the ID Theft factory as well as the charred remains of stolen mail and financial documents in a fireplace. The ringleader’s car was searched and dozens of stolen personal and business checks were found along with counterfeit IDs and methamphetamine.
On May 1st, a fifth suspect was arrested in Bellevue and booked into King County Jail on three counts of ID Theft 2nd degree and one count of Possession of Stolen Property 2nd degree. In total, two women and three men were arrested ranging from ages 30 to 40.

Det. Chinn gave an excellent overview of protecting our community from the crimes that have taken place when he spoke at the Woodridge Community Association meeting tonight. He gave us a handout on safety tips we can all use, he urged us to talk to our neighbors more, and he commented on how useful this blog is.
We are SO fortunate that the police keep an eye out for our neighborhood! We can help them by reporting anything suspicious, documenting what we’re concerned about with facts, pictures, and any other useful information.
When Det. Chinn put out a photo of a suspected robber, we were all empowered to be on the lookout. Let’s ALL keep our eyes & ears open so we can assist our wonderful Bellevue Police Dept.!

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day which will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.
Americans that participated in the DEA’s third National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on October 29, 2011, turned in more than 377,086 pounds (188.5 tons) of unwanted or expired medications for safe and proper disposal at the 5,327 take-back sites that were available in all 50 states and U.S. territories. When the results of the three prior Take-Back Days are combined, the DEA, and its state, local, and tribal law-enforcement and community partners have removed 995,185 pounds (498.5 tons) of medication from circulation in the past 13 months.
“The amount of prescription drugs turned in by the American public during the past three Take-Back Day events speaks volumes about the need to develop a convenient way to rid homes of unwanted or expired prescription drugs,” said DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart. “DEA remains hard at work to establish just such a drug disposal process, and will continue to offer take-back opportunities until the proper regulations are in place.”

I fell victim to a fraud earlier today from a door-to-door salesman. A young man named Neal Wachob (a heavy set male about 6 feet tall with short brown hair…in fact, you can look up his name in Facebook for his picture) came by claiming to be attending UC Berkeley, selling magazines to fund his trip to Spain for a Toastmasters competition. He claimed to be living with his mother, just a few houses down from where I live. A lot of details of his fundraising didn’t make sense however I ignored my better judgement and still purchased a magazine subscription from him for $59 with the intent of it being donated to Oakland Children’s Hospital. I made my check out to “Marquis Fulfillment Agency” and upon Googling it, I discovered that it is NOT a legitimate fundraising program and that similar scams have occurred all over the country.
I am embarrassed to have fallen for this ruse but hope that this notice will prevent others in the neighborhood from making the same mistake I did.
Thanks for your attention.

Thanks for your kind words. He is the Neal Wachob who lives in Orange Park, FL. No, I have not reported this to the police but will do so now. To be clear, I don’t know that the magazines won’t be donated to the hospital (although I highly doubt it), I only know that his story of fundraising for collegiate speech competition is a flat-out lie and that this scam has been perpetrated nationwide. Live and learn…

Keep on guard: I was at my friend’s house around dinner time 5:30-6pm yesterday at the south end of 121st Street SE. Before I pulled into his driveway, I passed a medium brown skin small build man about 35 (?). He was approx 5’6″ around 150 pounds wearing jeans and a tan collared jacket. He stared at me in my car as I drove by and I stared back. He had brown eyes and a shaven small head. I drove into my friend’s driveway and watched a bit from my rear view mirror. The man was pacing back and forth with a cell phone up to his ear and he was holding a white two handled paper bag. I went to my friend’s door and quickly told him to come out and he did. I asked him if h ever saw the guy before. He said, No. We watched the guy pace and use his phone. Then we saw him walk down to the dead end culdesac just below my friend’s house northwest of my friend’s house. Then we called the police to report suspicious behavior. While waiting for the police to arrive, I used my friend’s phone and drove down there. I knew it had a turn around. I wanted to see what house this man was at in case there was a burglary. As I drove past the first couple of houses on the left of me, I saw the guy crouched down in the lower driveway of the 3rd house. I kept driving to the circle around. I was nervous at this point. I drove slow. I asked one of the neighbors who was in her driveway if she knew who lived there. She did not. I asked her if she ever saw anybody describing the man before and she did not. I continued driving past the house trying to see what the house number was and I could not see one. There was already a white suv in the upper driveway. Then this large dark blue chevy g20 van with tinted windows and like a camper bubble on the roof. (I don’t know what that it: more roof room? ) and I saw the driver (also darker skin with mustach), and although the windows were tinted, I was able to see shadows of two other heads in the front part of the van moving around. I tried to get a pic of the van but I also thought I should get out of there so I was not successful. The license plate was like AFV8491 or something like that. I think it was WA plate due to the white background. I slowly continued to exit. I saw the driver of the van looking around like he was looking for someone and then I saw in my rear view mirror that he pulled into that houses upper driveway. I still thought it was strange. As I passed the house, I saw another friend picking up his friend at the house nextdoor. I asked him if he knew who lived at that house in question. He said he did not know: caucasion people. So I left and went back to my friend’s house and he called the owner of the house nextdoor. The owner said those people of the house in quesion were not home. We called the police back and let them know of the ongoings. Then we watched from my friends living rom window to see what happens next. We then saw the van come out of the culdesac and head up the street toward Norwood park. We were still on the phone with the police. While we waited for the police, about 5 minutes later, the same man I originally saw came walking down the road without the white bag and headed back into the culdesac. I had to head home but as I did, I circled around the neighborhood to see if I saw the van parked somewhere. I did not. So I made one last drive into that culdesac to see if I saw that man and as I was leaving, the police arrived. I got out to point to the house I was concerned about. The police said the did see the van. I had to go, I was in a hurry. I wished I would have asked what the police did when they saw the van but I was a bit shaken up and had to get home. A second police came and they were looking around the outside of the house. I don’t know what the outcome was. I did learn that the white suv originally parked at that house did belong to the owner but they were not home. No word on the van and all those strange men that were there.
April 14, 2012 at 8:43 am
neighbor
AS I reread this, I see I need to clear up something. The white suv was unoccuppied parked in the upper driveway. The strange man was crouched down in the lower driveway that leads to the lower end of the house. The man was clean shaven (or smooth faced), and the large blue chevy van was the one that drove in while I was exiting and parked in the upper driveway temporarily.

Neighbor and long time resident
In response to the above statement i want to claify that the above described male is an out of town guest staying at my house and used to be a local resident, his cousin was coming by yesterday in that blue van to drop off some of his clothes and exchange some personal items, he was on his cell phone with the blue van because the blue van was lost with directions which is why he was walking up the street so he can guide them in, both described males have no previous crimnal records and are hard working stand up citzens, there was no suspicious activities going on, he was worried who was driving in the gold van because they were following him as he did not feel safe and felt threatened by an unknown vehicle following him, i think this just goes to show racism still exisits in our communities today and i certainly hope one day we can come together as one. We understand that an unknown male was walking on these streets but him being dark skinned obviously bothered you and we are sorry for the confusion this may have caused, as scared as you were of him he was scared of someone following him also. The police came to my house and i spoke to them, at first i thought they were talking about someone else as they described an “hispanic” male but after talking with my guest he said it was him looking for his cousin…any more concerns please feel free to respond

From the behavior described in the original post, I would have done exactly the same as neighbor, regardless of race. I would have called the police to investigate. I would have called the police regardless of gender or race. People should not be crouching in driveways in Woodridge. That behavior is suspicious. I was told recently by the Bellevue police that our crime rate has gotten so high that they now are sending unmarked police up on our hill. We have a serious crime problem folks. That is the sad truth and everyone needs to step outside, look about and be willing to question what is going on around them.

I totally agree with what your saying and im not upset that the police were called as I’m a cautious neighbor myself I’m upset at the fact why the police were called, I’m being up front and honest so I would appreciate non ignorance the reason they were called was due to racial profiling, as she stated “strange men” she doesn’t know these men and there credentials so her mind was already made up that they were strange due to color…as far as crouching goes he wasn’t crouching he noticed a unknown vehicle following him and went around the other side of the car to get out of view as he was worried and had right to be….now I acknowledge the crime rate going up in this area but If this is the case I live in a private cult de sac so anyone I see walking or I dont know then im going to call the police on everyone if that’s how were going to handle Dealing with people we don’t recognize in the neighborhood

I was not going to dignify your ungratefullness for me watching a house I don’t even know, with a response of my own….but I am so appauled at your response, I feel I need to. I am NOT a racist at all.I am just a kind person who watches out for neighbors, even ones I don’t know. My sister-in-law is a beautiful black woman from Trinadad and we good friends we have over a lot are from South Africa. My family also attended a Spanish-only speaking school to further their education and communicate with some of our hispanic workers we employ. There is not a single culture I dislike. I simply used the color of their skin whether it would have been pale white, tan, freckled, brown, black, purple, yellow: whatnot, to describe the human I saw. If the guy was so scared of little ole me, then why did he not go into the house you say he was staying at? And why did he leave in the van only to walk back down the street again? I don’t really need an answer to this< I just wanted to point out that it was the "color of the behavior" that scared me, not the "color of his skin". I was only watching out for your house and I don't know you from Adam. If your house would have been a possible object of burglary, I was sticking my neck out, being brave and driving down to investigate to help an owner, whom I thought was not home, protect their belongings. I was not racial profiling. I would have described the man white with red hair and freckles or black curly hair with tan skin if that was what I saw. I am not sorry for what I reported. I am only sorry you see my reporting in a negative way.
May 14, 2012 at 1:11 am
Tom C,
You are a jerk. Those who yell “racist or racial profiling” in these situations are quite simply morons. Doesn’t matter if the guy was purple. Suspicious behavior is suspicious behavior. You are lucky there are people who look out for their neighbors. A lot of people do not wish to become involved, and it is doughnuts like you that make good people think why bother. Go take a flying leap into a brick wall. As I said at the beginning you are a jerk

Jenny,
I got this post. Thank You. I am copying and pasting the important post about someone possibly using campfires near the ravine.
Just sharing a note I posted to the norwoodvillage@gmail.com on March 28. President Bob Weiss indicated this will be brought up at the next board meeting:
We live along the Ravine Park greenbelt that is entered along 123ed and is between SE 27th Street and SE 26th and bordered on the west by the 405 berm.
The other day my son and I ventured part way down the greenbelt and noted that there appears to be a chair and couch down at the bottom (Near where the drain pipe that goes under 405 is located) with a fire pit. The furniture has graffiti on it as well. This fire pit had burned wood in it and what appeared to be a fresh pile of fire wood as yet not burned. We know there has been incidents over the years of people basically living down there. While we did not observe any tents or other indication of overnight stay, we are still concerned this may be occurring.
While we have never had any incidents of anyone bothering us this is still a little bothersome to know someone may be down there and apparently having campfires. A fire is not likely with the rain we are having but when it dries out a fire would certainly take out the homes at the top of this ravine.
How is this prevented and at this point cleaned up?
Thank you for your information.
